Every fall and accident while cycling carries a risk of injury and death, whatever equipment you are wearing. This airbag backpack should not encourage you to take greater risks. In certain circumstances it can reduce the likelihood of injury when it activates. It does not prevent the fall or the accident.

1. Quick tips

  1. Remember to open the activation buckle for every activity other than cycling.
  2. Only close the buckle after you are on the bike.
  3. Open the buckle before you get off.
  4. Always return the buckles to the park position. See section 9.
  5. The zip slider must always be folded down while you are wearing the pack.
  6. Never unscrew the inflator (cartridge). Risk of death. Not even after it has been triggered.
  7. Remove the inflator after a deployment so the air can escape faster.
  8. The logo hook-and-loop tab should always stay closed.
  9. The pack is rain protected.
  10. Keep the magnetic buckles away from metal objects, or the pack will activate.
  11. Flying with the pack is possible. Register with your airline before you travel and remove the inflator for the flight. See section 12 and the Australian note there.
  12. To pair the app with the AIRDING, Bluetooth and GPS must be switched on and permissions granted. Remember to activate the pack so the app can find it.
  13. A red and green flashing LED means less than four hours of battery remain.

2. How it works

The MINERVA AIRBAG SYSTEM is a sensor-controlled airbag protector. It works by reducing the forces acting on your body during a fall.

The USB-C rechargeable sensor unit analyses the position and orientation of the AIRDING, and therefore of the rider, more than 300 times per second. When the defined trigger conditions are met, the system reacts and the inflator fills the airbag with CO2 within a few milliseconds, at which point the airbag reaches its full protective effect.

After a deployment, and after checking the airbag for damage, the system can be used again with a new inflator. The system may only be used with the MINERVA inflator.

Airbags provide up to 80% better cushioning than hard protectors. MINERVA airbags are continuously improved and verified in purpose-developed tests in Minerva's own laboratories and in external certification laboratories.

4. Intended use

The AIRDING Compact, fitted with the MINERVA AIRBAG SYSTEM and the integrated SAS-TEC protector, has been developed specifically for everyday cycling on all road surfaces, including road cycling, as well as forest and field paths.

The AIRDING with the pre-assembled MINERVA AIRBAG SYSTEM may only be used with the supplied protector. The airbag system additionally serves to reduce possible severe injuries from falls. Depending on the airbag used, a range of different body areas are covered and protected.

The airbag system cannot always protect you. Unwanted deployments are rare but cannot be ruled out entirely. After an unwanted deployment the system can be reused by replacing the recyclable inflator, using only the original MINERVA inflator.

5. Safety information and limits of use

The airbag system does not replace wearing a helmet.

The AirRide and AirTour models are always to be worn in combination with a helmet. The system also cannot always protect you, for example in direct collisions or in particular accident situations.

Australian note: wearing an approved bicycle helmet complying with AS/NZS 2063 is required by law in every Australian state and territory, on every ride. This product is not a helmet and does not satisfy that requirement.

Not suitable for

The AIRDING is designed exclusively for the use described in section 4. It is not suitable for other purposes, in particular not for extreme mountain biking, downhill, BMX, motorsport, or on motorised vehicles such as scooters, quads, Segways, or in comparable sports.

Protection against injury cannot be guaranteed. Only the likelihood of injury can be reduced. This applies in particular to twisting, hyperextension and compression injuries.

Pacemakers and implanted electronic devices

There is a magnet built into the activation buckle.

Although it is unlikely, it cannot be ruled out that the magnet in the buckle may cause problems with electronic implants such as pacemakers or defibrillators. If you have an implanted electronic device, speak to your doctor before using this product.

Inflator safety

Check the weight of the inflator at regular intervals. Without the black protective cap it should weigh approximately 365 grams (+/- 3 grams). The inflator should also be re-weighed after exposure to high heat. An empty inflator without the black cap weighs approximately 292 grams (+/- 3 grams).

Never use an empty inflator in the system. If you are unsure, contact us.

Airbag inspection

Annual or regular servicing of the airbag by Minerva-AS is not necessary. Even after a deployment you can check the airbag fabric for damage yourself and it does not need to be sent in for servicing. Small holes do not impair the protective function.

However, you should have your airbag checked by Minerva-AS for leaks and completeness once it has deployed approximately 15 to 20 times.

Before every ride

  • Be aware that carrying pointed or sharp objects can impair the protective function of all protectors.
  • Do not carry glass bottles, items at risk of explosion, or readily flammable or corrosive liquids in the Compact.
  • Make sure nothing that could damage the protectors is carried loose in the pack.
  • Check that all straps and buckles are firmly closed and undamaged.
  • Check that the LED on the activation buckle shows the system is ready.
  • Open the activation buckle immediately after every ride to deactivate the system.

Clothing

Once the system is activated, do not wear clothing that could impair the function of the AIRDING. This includes very thick scarves, thick hoods and similarly bulky garments. Do not wear anything over the AIRDING, in particular no rain covers, which would prevent the airbag inflating. Jackets and pullovers must not be worn over the pack either.

No modifications

The AIRDING can only reduce possible serious injury from an impact if it is correctly fitted and correctly worn. No changes may be made to the harness, the airbag system or the protector. Any such change voids the warranty. The protector is flexible across its surface by virtue of its material properties, but it should not be creased at a single point.

App registration

The inflator should not yet be fitted to the Compact at this stage.

Using the MASE app is recommended. After registering once with your email address, the latest software updates for your MINERVA AIRBAG SYSTEM become available. The app also shows your Minerva ID and the battery charge level.

At the start of setup you need to grant Bluetooth and GPS permissions. If you are not prompted automatically, grant them in your system settings. To pair the pack, switch on both Bluetooth and GPS, and remember to close the buckle so the pack can be found. When scanning, a four-digit Minerva ID should appear.

7. Getting started: fit and charge

Correct fit

  1. Adjust for your torso length. Before you charge the system and fit the inflator, make sure the AIRDING is adjusted to your individual torso length.
  2. Note the protected areas. The airbag and protector only provide protection in the areas they cover.
  3. Optimal positioning. For the best possible protection the harness must be worn in the intended position.
  4. Preparation. Watch all the available videos before first use.

Step 1: Put the Compact on

Put the Compact on like a vest. Loosen the rib straps at the buckle if you need to.

Step 2: Close the zip

Close the front zip. Always fold the zip slider downwards so the airbag stays in position when it deploys.

Step 3: Adjust the rib strap

Position the length-adjustable rib strap close to the body. Use the plastic buckle at the sides to adjust the length.

Note: the pack should sit relatively high on the neck.

Step 4: Optimal adjustment

  • Make sure the AIRDING sits as close to your back as possible.
  • Make sure all straps and buckles sit close to the body when closed, to avoid snagging in use.
  • Make sure the AIRDING sits compactly on your upper body so the chest strap is taut across the chest.
  • This ensures the AIRDING, and therefore the airbag, is correctly positioned.

Step 5: Close the activation buckle

Only close the activation buckle while wearing the pack.

While cycling, the AIRDING must always be used with the zip closed and the activation buckle flashing green. In all other cases the protective effect is not present.

Charging

  1. Charge fully before first use. Open the zip of the inflator compartment as far as the logo tab to reach the trigger unit. The hook-and-loop fastening on the logo tab must stay closed.
  2. Charging. Pull the fabric at the end of the zip down slightly to reach the trigger unit. Remove the USB cover on the unit and charge the system with the supplied USB-C cable. A red flashing LED on the activation buckle indicates charging. The LED goes out once the battery is charged.
  3. Charge regularly to ensure the system works correctly.

8. Fitting the inflator

Before fitting, make sure the activation buckle is in its park position on the right and left shoulder straps. Otherwise operating errors can cause an unwanted deployment.
  1. Remove the black protective cap from the inflator.
  2. Open the inflator compartment, then both hook-and-loop fastenings at the red tabs to reach the safety pin.
  3. Pull the red safety pin out as far as it will go. Check that it is fully withdrawn before you fit the inflator into the trigger unit.
  4. Insert the inflator into the compartment with the neck of the bottle facing backwards. Position it over the hole and press the inflator head down with a little pressure. There should be slight resistance. A click confirms correct positioning.
  5. Push the red safety pin fully back in to secure the inflator.
  6. Close both hook-and-loop fastenings, making sure they sit closely against the inflator. Once the zip is closed your AIRDING is ready to use.

Never unscrew the inflator. Risk of death. This applies even after it has been triggered.

9. Activating and deactivating

The system is activated and deactivated by closing and opening the activation buckle.

Park position

Make sure the activation buckle is always in the park position when not riding. This prevents it closing by itself through magnetic attraction and causing an unwanted deployment. Also keep other metal objects away from the magnet.

To park it: open the activation buckle and push the buckle on both sides into the park position on the right and left shoulder straps. Push it under the elastic band first. For a better hold you can slide the rear part slightly under the small fabric pocket and lay the fabric over it.

System check on activation

Closing the activation buckle runs a system check that verifies the battery status and the functionality of the inflator. A green flashing LED in the lower half of the buckle shows the system is ready and has more than four hours of battery life.

  • Only activate the system while cycling.
  • In all other cases, return the activation buckle to the park position on the right and left shoulder straps.
  • Only use the AIRDING when the LED shows readiness by flashing green.
  • To prevent an unwanted deployment, only close the buckle once you are sitting on the bike, and open it before you get off.

Opening the activation buckle deactivates the system. The LED confirms this by flashing red three times and going out. Simply opening the buckle is not enough. It must be returned to the park position immediately.

The stated battery life of 25 to 30 hours refers to riding time with the buckle closed.

10. LED meanings and troubleshooting

Flashing green System is in use and has at least 4 hours of battery remaining.
Flashing red and green System is in use with less than 4 hours remaining. Stop using it if you can and charge it immediately, otherwise the system may shut down unexpectedly.
Flashing red System is charging. The flashing stops once the battery is fully charged.
Solid red System is not ready for use. Follow the troubleshooting steps below.
Problem What to do
LED flashes red and green This is a warning that only about 4 hours of battery remain. Charge the system and check that it is charging. If the LED still flashes red and green after 3 hours of charging, check the connection between the trigger unit and the charging cable, or change the cable. If it still flashes red and green, contact us.
LED is solid red The system is not ready. Check whether the inflator is still full by weighing it. Without the black cap it should weigh about 365 g (+/- 3 g). If it weighs only about 292 g (+/- 3 g), fit a new inflator. Make sure it is correctly installed. If the LED is still red, contact us.
Irregular red flashing If the LED flashes red irregularly with the buckle open and it is not charging, close the buckle and wait at least 5 seconds. The fault clears when you open it again.
No response from the system Fit the inflator and charge the system fully. Remove the inflator and refit it. If there is still no response, contact us.
Inflator will not fit The inflator fits into the trigger unit with slight resistance. Check that the inflator contacts enter the trigger unit correctly and that the safety pin is fully withdrawn. Contact us if you have any questions.

11. After a deployment: refolding

When the trigger conditions are met in a fall or a fall-like situation, the MINERVA AIRBAG SYSTEM deploys automatically and the LED on the activation buckle turns solid red. After a visual check, and using a new, original inflator and the correct folding of the airbag, the system can be made ready for use again.

After any deployment, fall or impact

  1. Function check. Make sure the harness, the airbag and the protector are fully functional.
  2. Damage check. Check all protectors, straps, buckles and clips for mechanical damage.
  3. Visual inspection. Check the airbag visually for abrasion, tears or cuts.
  4. Check the trigger unit and inflator for possible damage before you refit the system.
  5. If in doubt, contact us.

Open the front inflator compartment using the zip to reach the trigger unit.

Step 2: Remove the inflator

  • Pull the red safety pin out as far as it will go.
  • If the pin will not release, press firmly on the inflator head with the heel of your hand and try again.
  • Pull the inflator out by the inflator head.
  • Put the protective cap back on the inflator.
  • Contact us to arrange return of the used inflator.

Step 3: Remove the air from the airbag

  • Squeeze the airbag to let the remaining air escape.
  • Push the air towards the centre, in the direction of the hole in the trigger unit.
  • Repeat until all the air has escaped.

Step 4: Prepare the Compact

  • Return the activation buckle to the park position.
  • Check that all zip sliders are in their lowest position.

Step 5: Position the pack

Lay the pack on its back and pull the zip of the inflator compartment up as far as it will go.

Step 6: Begin folding

  • The airbag has white woven guide lines to make folding easier.
  • The black lines are not guide lines and can be ignored completely when folding.
  • The folded edge should always sit on the fold line so that you can see the line.
  • Start with the neck section, folding concertina style, alternating one layer up and one down.
  • The neck area should end up as 3 layers.

Step 7: Further preparation

  • Close the logo hook-and-loop tab over the part you have just folded.
  • Tighten the shoulder pad slightly and position it so that "Upside" is facing up.
  • Turn the Compact completely over so the back section faces you. The straps should now lie horizontally in front of you.

Step 8: Check the airbag position

  • Make sure you can see the back of the Compact and predominantly the grey side of the airbag.
  • Normally the outer wings (the face pads) already lie so that the white side is visible. The fold line continues here too.
  • Make sure the chest pads are not twisted and show the grey side of the airbag.
  • If the white side of the outer wings is not visible, fold the outermost wing onto the airbag so the white side becomes visible.

Step 9: Fold the airbag

Fold the shoulder pad concertina style, starting from the bottom, alternating one layer up and one down.

Do NOT roll the airbag up, or it will deploy incorrectly.
  • Then fold one layer down and up so the edge lands back on the fold line.
  • Next, work the chest and face pads into the fold, again using the guide lines.
  • The small white airbag flap should be positioned so the fold line continues.
  • Slide the folded-in white airbag section smoothly into the fold and continue the concertina folding.
  • You can fold the whole section from shoulder to chest in one piece.
  • You should end up with 5 layers. The flatter you fold the layers, the thinner the straps become.
  • Finally you should be holding a strand of airbag roughly the width of the strap.

Step 10: Stow the airbag in the strap

Place the folded section into the strap. The lower part can be folded up slightly and tucked under the end of the zip, right through to the end of the strap.

Important: when positioning the airbag, make sure the white shoulder pad with the woven word "Upside" faces up and is visible. This is essential for correct deployment.

Step 11: Partially close the zip

Pull the zip carefully upwards, piece by piece, to the halfway point. The zip stays open at this stage. It only closes later, when the zip slider is pulled back to its starting position. This prevents the slider being torn off during a deployment.

Step 12: Left strap

Repeat steps 8 to 11 for the left strap, again starting with the airbag wing (face pad). Pull the zip up to the middle here too.

Step 13: Stow the upper airbag section

Take the upper protruding part of the airbag, adjust it carefully, and slide it gently under the logo tab into the inside.

Do NOT twist the airbag.

Step 14: Close the zips

  • Pull the zip of the right strap carefully all the way up under the logo tab, then pull it back down to the starting point at the end of the strap, so the zip on the strap is closed. Repeat for the left strap.
  • In the inflator compartment, check that the front hooked toggle bands lie roughly as shown in the manufacturer's illustration.
  • Pull the zip of the inflator compartment back down to its starting position.

Not confident doing this yourself? Bring the pack to NG Mobility at 232 Montague Road, West End, or send it to us. Our inspection, refold and re-arm service carries no charge for the work. You pay only for the new inflator and freight. Remove the spent inflator before you send the pack, and do not include it in the parcel.

12. Care, cleaning, storage and transport

Removing the system for cleaning

  1. Deactivate the system and put the activation buckle in the park position.
  2. Remove the inflator FIRST, before you remove the system. Take the inflator out and fit the protective cap.
  3. Open the airbag compartment by releasing the central hook-and-loop fastening (logo tab) and opening the zip across the white central chest section, as well as the zips on the shoulder straps.
  4. Release the connecting elements (toggle bands) between the airbag and the Compact once the airbag is exposed. These hold the airbag to the harness.
  5. Disconnect the plug between the trigger unit cable and the activation buckle cable.
  6. Remove the airbag by opening the rear hook-and-loop plate, guiding the trigger unit upwards and pulling it out of the pack together with the airbag.

Cleaning

Although the system is splash protected, avoid direct contact between the trigger unit and water or other liquids. A dirty airbag can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Do not hold the electronic components under running water or immerse them, and that includes the cable plug connection. If you are wetting the pack, keep the plug connection and the activation buckle out of the water.

Clean the harness and the protector by hand wash at a maximum of 30 °C using a gentle detergent (neutral soap). Let the pack air dry. Do not use a tumble dryer or any heat source.

Machine washing voids the warranty, as does wetting the electronics during hand washing.

Storage and transport

Deactivate the system for transport or storage by placing the activation buckle in the park position on the right and left shoulder straps, to prevent unintentional activation.

Leave the inflator in the system, with one exception: carriage by air. Before travelling or sending the pack by post, remove the inflator and pack it alongside the backpack.

During transport, take care that the AIRDING is not damaged by pointed or sharp objects.

Avoid deep discharge of the battery. A charge of 50% to 80% is optimal, which you can read in the app.

Store the dry pack with the system unit and inflator in a dry place, away from children, at 15 °C to 20 °C, protected from UV light and away from corrosive or aggressive substances.

Air travel

The manufacturer states that carrying the AIRDING on aircraft is permitted under IATA rules, subject to registering it with the airline in advance, and that the final decision on carriage rests with the airline.

Australian note. An AIRDING contains a compressed CO2 cartridge and a small pyrotechnic actuator, which makes it dangerous goods for air transport. Airline dangerous goods policies differ, and the entry most policies are written around covers avalanche rescue backpacks, which this product is not. Do not assume your airline will accept it. Contact your airline's dangerous goods desk at least two weeks before you travel, tell them exactly what the product contains, and get the answer in writing. We can supply the manufacturer's cartridge data sheet. The decision belongs to your carrier, not to us and not to MASE.

13. Service life, warranty and your rights in Australia

Service life

Inflator Rated for 5 years by the CO2 cartridge manufacturer, or immediately after any deployment. The manufacture date is on the bottle sticker.
Protector and MINERVA AIRBAG SYSTEM 10 years from the date of manufacture.
Battery After some years, if you notice a marked drop in battery performance, the manufacturer recommends having the battery replaced as part of a service to extend the life of the system.

The manufacturer states that if your inflator has passed the 5 year period, you should contact them and they will exchange the inflator free of charge. NG Mobility is confirming with Minerva-AS how this applies to Australian customers, including freight. Contact us and we will handle it.

Empty inflators are recycled. Contact us to arrange return.

Disposal

The AIRDING contains a permanently fitted rechargeable battery. At end of life it must not go into household waste. Take it to a council e-waste collection point, or return it to us at West End and we will handle it.

Certification

The MINERVA inflation technology is tested and certified by BAM, the German Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, under EU type examination certificate 0589.PYR.1594/17. The MINERVA electronics are certified by TÜV Straubing. The SAS-TEC protector is tested and certified to the EN 1621 series.

These are component-level certifications. There is currently no Australian or international product standard covering complete wearable cycling airbags, and the assembled AIRDING is not certified as a whole product.

Limitations of the system

The AIRDING is designed for the very large forces that can occur in a fall. Even so, injuries in a fall cannot be ruled out. It can happen that the AIRDING does not deploy, or deploys late, in rare cases or under certain conditions. The conditions for a delayed deployment relate to the trigger conditions not being met. As set out above, incorrect deployments can also occur in rare cases.

The system checks a large number of parameters and calculates the deployment with the necessary sensitivity, so that falls are detected early. Nevertheless the risk of a late deployment or a non-deployment in certain situations cannot be entirely excluded.

Your rights under Australian Consumer Law

Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.

Any manufacturer's warranty is in addition to these rights and does not limit them.

Note on the manufacturer's original text. The German manual contains a general exclusion of warranty and liability. That exclusion does not apply in Australia and has been omitted from this translation. Under Australian law, terms purporting to exclude the consumer guarantees have no effect. Nothing in this manual limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.

This does not affect the manufacturer's position that damage or injury caused by improper use, repairs by unauthorised persons, modification of the product, or the use of non-original replacement parts or unauthorised third-party components is outside what they will stand behind. Following the instructions in this manual matters.
