What is a cycling airbag backpack?

A cycling airbag backpack, like the MASE AIRDING range, is a wearable safety device with built-in motion sensors that detect a fall in progress and inflate an airbag around your neck, shoulders, collarbone, chest and upper back — areas your helmet doesn't cover. It's worn over your regular riding gear like a normal backpack.

Do I still need to wear a helmet?

Yes — always. Australian road rules require cyclists to wear an approved bicycle helmet at all times. A MASE airbag is supplementary protection worn together with your helmet; it is not a helmet and does not replace one.

How does the airbag know when to deploy?

MASE's onboard sensors monitor your position and acceleration up to 300 times per second and are designed to recognise the motion pattern of a fall, inflating the airbag in under 150 milliseconds — far faster than you could react manually.

Is the airbag reusable after it deploys?

Yes. Unlike single-use airbag vests, every MASE AIRDING unit is reusable: refold the airbag, fit a new inflator cartridge, and it's ready to wear again. Our Brisbane workshop can also do the refold for you — no charge for the work, just the cartridge and freight.

Which MASE model should I choose?

It depends on how you ride. Compact AirRide is the lightest option for everyday commuting with no shoulder coverage or storage. Fusion AirRide adds shoulder coverage, a back protector and 2.5L of storage for commuting, e-bike and MTB use. Can it guarantee it will detect every fall?

No system can guarantee 100% detection. MASE notes that false deployments or non-deployments are possible, particularly with atypical movements such as jumps or tricks. Talk to us about your riding style at a demo fitting.
