Every bike helmet sold in Australia has to meet a mandatory safety standard, but that's only the starting point. A helmet that meets the standard and doesn't fit properly still won't protect you the way it's designed to. This guide covers what the law actually requires, how MIPS technology works, the helmet categories worth knowing about, how to get the fit right, and when it's time to replace what you're wearing.

The Law: AS/NZS 2063:2008

Every state and territory in Australia requires cyclists to wear an approved helmet, and "approved" means certified to AS/NZS 2063:2008. This is a mandatory standard, not a suggestion — a helmet sold here has to pass impact testing, retention system testing, and coverage requirements before it can legally carry the compliance mark.

Check for the AS/NZS 2063 marking inside the shell or on the retention strap before you buy. Helmets bought privately from overseas retailers sometimes carry only a European (EN1078) or US (CPSC) certification, which doesn't always satisfy Australian road rules. If you're riding an eBike, standard certification matters even more, since eBikes routinely travel at 25 km/h or faster — outside the 20 km/h scope a base-level helmet is tested to. Riders on a road-legal eBike should look for a helmet rated for higher speeds, which brings us to MIPS.

What MIPS Actually Does

MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. It's a low-friction layer fitted inside the helmet shell, sitting between the foam and your head, that allows a small amount of rotational movement on impact.

Most falls aren't straight-on. You hit the ground at an angle, and the impact transfers both a direct force and a rotational force to your skull and brain. Standard foam handles the direct force reasonably well. It does very little for the rotational component, which is where a lot of concussion-related injury actually comes from. The MIPS liner lets the helmet shell rotate slightly independently of your head on an angled impact, shaving a meaningful amount of that rotational force before it reaches you.

It's not a legal requirement and it's not the only rotational-protection system on the market, but it's the most established, and it's worth prioritising in any helmet you're seriously considering — particularly if you're riding at eBike speeds on Australian roads.

Helmet Categories: Which Type Do You Actually Need?

Not every helmet is built for the same job. Broadly, you're choosing between:

  • Road/commuter helmets — lighter, more ventilated, designed for sustained riding at moderate-to-higher speeds on sealed roads. This is the right category for most day-to-day and eBike commuting.
  • Urban/hybrid helmets — a step heavier and more coverage-focused than a pure road helmet, often with a visor and a more casual look. Good for mixed commuting and weekend riding.
  • Mountain bike helmets — extended rear coverage for the more upright, aggressive riding position and lower-speed technical falls typical of trail riding.
  • Kids' helmets — sized and certified separately, never a scaled-down adult shell. Fit is even more critical here since a loose kids' helmet is one of the most common causes of poor protection in a fall.

For most riders commuting on a road-legal eBike around Australian cities, a road or urban helmet with MIPS and eBike-appropriate certification is the sensible default.

Getting the Fit Right

A helmet that doesn't fit is a helmet that doesn't protect you, regardless of what standard it's certified to. Four things to check every time:

  • Circumference. Measure around your head about 2cm above your eyebrows — that's where the helmet should actually sit, not pushed back off your forehead. Match that measurement to the brand's size chart rather than guessing off a generic S/M/L.
  • Level fit. The helmet should sit level on your head, front edge roughly two finger-widths above your eyebrows. Tilted back is the single most common fit mistake and it leaves your forehead completely exposed.
  • V-strap position. The straps should form a V shape that meets just below and slightly in front of each ear. If the V sits too far forward or back, the helmet will shift under impact instead of staying put.
  • One-finger chin test. Once the chin strap is buckled, you should be able to fit exactly one finger between the strap and your chin — snug enough that the helmet doesn't rock forward or back when you shake your head, loose enough to breathe and swallow normally.

Everything above applies to any helmet, smart or not. When to Replace Your Helmet

Three rules cover almost every situation:

  • After any crash, even if there's no visible damage. The foam is designed to compress and absorb energy once — that process can happen without cracking the outer shell, and a helmet that's already absorbed an impact has less capacity to absorb another.
  • After five years, regardless of use. Foam and retention plastics degrade with UV exposure, sweat, and temperature cycling even in a helmet that's never been dropped.
  • Never buy second-hand. You have no way of knowing whether a used helmet has been in a crash, how it's been stored, or how old it actually is. The saving isn't worth the unknown.

Is AS/NZS 2063 the only standard I should look for?

It's the mandatory one for legal riding in Australia, so it needs to be there regardless. If you're riding an eBike at higher speeds, also look for a helmet with additional high-speed certification such as NTA-8776, which tests protection up to 45 km/h rather than the 20 km/h scope of a base cycling standard.

Do I need MIPS, or is it just marketing?

MIPS is a genuine engineering feature with independent testing behind it, not a marketing label. It specifically addresses rotational impact force, which standard foam doesn't handle well on its own. It's not mandatory, but for the cost difference, most riders find it a sensible inclusion.

How do I know if my current helmet still fits properly?

Run the four fit checks above: circumference at 2cm above the eyebrows, level front edge, V-straps meeting below the ears, and a one-finger gap at the chin. If your helmet fails any of these — or if it rocks noticeably when you shake your head with the strap done up — it's not fitting correctly regardless of its age or certification.

My helmet looks fine after a minor fall. Do I really need to replace it?

Yes. Impact-absorbing foam can compress internally without any visible crack in the shell. A helmet that looks undamaged after a fall may have already used up the protection it was designed to provide once. Replace it rather than risk finding out the hard way.
